1. Location, location, location.
Do you have your heart set for sea views? Or maybe get out the door of your hotel room directly to the beach? It sounds wonderful, and that's it. But hold on to your wallet! You pay more, maybe much more, for these luxury items.
Location is really all about finding affordable room rates at Cape Cod hotels and motels.
With so many wonderful places to explore and fun things to do on the Cape, how much time do you really expect to spend in your room looking out the window? I bet you will be out and about much more than walking around your room.
And when we talk about "going out," why limit yourself to the same beach every day just because you paid more for the space facing the beach? Even if you are only here for a few days, you will visit more than one beach. (Believe me, you will!) Our Ocean, Bay and Sound beaches are very different and all special in their own way. Visit one of each to get the real feel of Cape!
So, if budget is an important factor in planning your vacation, think twice in space facing the ocean. Choose a room with a more modest view, or perhaps a hotel within walking distance of a beach. Save on a delicious cape code rescue lobster party or some really special activities with the money you save. You will be glad to have done it!
2. See "Extras" and package deals.
Free continental breakfast. Coupons for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant. Free use of bicycles and beach chairs. Whale watching, a round of golf and organized activities for children or even the whole family. These are just some of the "extras" and package holidays offered at some Cape Cod hotels, motels and resorts.

When considering the money you want to spend on food and activities during your vacation, it sometimes makes sense to choose a hotel, motel or resort that includes some of these extras as part of the room rate. But only if you really use them, of course!
3. Don't discard discount places.
When you see a room rate that seems incredibly low, do you immediately think, "If it's so cheap, should it be a rathole"?
I'll admit it. I am often guilty of the same thought process when making our family's travel plans.
But I can tell you that in Cape Cod you will find very nice accommodations at incredibly low prices.
They may not be the most elegant places in town and may not have elegant décor, flat-screen TV or 24-hour reception 7 days a week. But for $ 100 a Night or less, you have a comfortable, clean and comfortable place to stay.
When viewing lists of Cape Cod accommodations in online booking services, do not click on the low cost options. Check them out. Read the opinions of travelers. View all photos.
Call the local phone number for the accommodation (it will probably be an area code 508). The person responding is likely to be a "local", and may even be the owner. Ask about accommodation, area and anything else you have in mind.
If traveler opinions are generally favorable and you have had a good experience with the person on the other side of the phone when you called ...
You've probably found one of our hidden gems!
Are you getting the best deal on Cape Cod accommodation when you book in advance or wait until the last minute? It is impossible to say with certainty.
A couple of years ago, when the economy first got into the dump, we saw some incredible last minute accommodations ... even at some of the most popular hotels and motels in Cape Cod, which are usually full of many months in advance
This year (2010), Cape Cod tourism came with some force and anyone who waited until the last minute to book a room for July or August had a more difficult time.
Who knows what 2011 will bring next? So my best advice remains: If you plan to visit the Cape during the summer months, the sooner you make your reservation, the best choice of location, rooms and rates you want.
